Amidst the collecting chaos where collecting is waning in this period of uncertainty!
I crawled into a new line of collecting. Bandai monsters!
This year marks the first time ever I venture into buying my first vinyl monsters from Bandai.
Funny thing is the only figure I know is Godzilla. Now I bought 1989 King Ghidora, 1995 Gamera, 1985 Angeilas, 1991 Godzilla Ghido Goji (at 14 inches tall), 1994 Orochi (Eight Headed Dragon) and recent 6 inch Shin Gojira.
Span just over 2 month, I caught the fever with the cluster of 6 wonderful monsters and start learning about the history of these wonderful toys.
I hope to stay just on the low and budget end restricting to earlier Bandai figures that I like. Trying to keep focus and small.
Well you can't have everything.
So here are some damage done.

Mutant Wolverine turns Werewolf Beast turns more Beastier
When Wolverine turns into werewolf.
Imagine Werewolf with deadlier claws.
He is from the earlier series of Mutant Marvel. An old school figure with howling sound which I have nt tested it.
For Beast, I would say he just turns more Beast. I still keeping him in box to enjoy the wholesomeness of 90's action figures.
The raw sculpt tells his age.

Flash Back : Mutant Monsters Wolverine #Marvel
Today, I throw you back to the 90's and zoom back to find one of the crazy idea action figures ever created.
I bumped into Mutant Monsters Wolverine upon my arrival in 1996 and he is a wolf clad with torn trails of Wolverine's X-Men classic uniform.
Is he Wolverine that turns into Wolf? Or he is just a wolf getting a hip of Wolverine.
It was design and meant to be Wolverine turning into wolf and howls his way to fight.
There is many imaginations in this figure. He can be a werewolf, Wolverine in Wolf form, Halloween figure and yes, he howls.....Sound gimmick!
In size, he stands up to 7 inches and display the best Wolverine claws that is straight and mean!
The articulations aren't great and very old school and have an ugly gaps at his armpit area. As a howling wolf, he has a jaw articulation to add on.
Overall, a very interesting action figure.
I would recommend if you are an Wolverine fan, Marvel classics, old school collectors, Monsters collectors, go for it!
He is quite rare to come in 2016. Good luck!

Supergirl to the rescue!
Amongst the few Supergirls that have been released, few make it to the hall of fame in the line but many still welcome another Supergirl to their collection, provided she is not hideous looking.
This is Supergirl from the Return of Supergirl produced by DcDirect in 2006 and one that is quite good in some angles of appreciation.
She possessed some awkwardness in her facial makeup and a little too slender body but her head sculpt with a swaying hairstyle are nicely done.
The paint job is not good as there are many blemishes especially between the yellow and blue color combinations along the rims of her top, wrists and belt area. The "S" sign is painted cleanly in my case.
So far, most Supergirl figures are unique in their own styles, unlike Superman who has a general outlook for most and if you are looking for the one Supergirl, this may not be the ultimate one to get but if you like her style in this design. Why not!

Happy Feet turns Ugly....Penguin of Batman lurks on!
Before Happy Feet, there was Penguin and he aren't very happy with his life and turns into the leader of the penguin pack commanding them against Batman. Somehow the bat taste better than the fish for this Penguin.
I am still continuing my Legends of Batman series of villains in this round and I just have to reintroduce these guys back on the center stage to appraise for their legendary designs which have been long forgotten by many.
Already in 1997, we are given a good standard of collectible action figures which paved the way for all current figures we have now. The competition is as high as today where toy companies fought hard to win over both kids and the growing adult collectors where they need to meet both ends unlike now where the difference are already defined in some areas of toys.
The Penguin which I got was in used lose condition but complete with accessories and comes with bit of age weathering that I termed as nature's paint works.
Although you cannot really posed Penguin as his legs are on fixed position, you can use his 3 limited articulations to render him around.
He wears a full crow sculpted coat matching with his umbrella top and topping off with his signature tall hat and walking stick. The crow covered design looks like the crows covered him in total to form the coat. Impressively, you may imagine the crows can transform his coat back by flying out and back to form the coat again.
Even the walking stick is not spared with details which can be installed with the umbrella top for him to take out some sunshine.
The umbrella top can also be snapped onto his back for storage or act as a shield which we used to do that for Captain America figures from Marvel Legends.
An impressive face sculpt showing his grin and pointy nose job while not forgetting his penguin-like fingers sculpted on his left hand.
Even when we have the newer Penguin from DCDirect, this Penguin does not disappoint even until today or maybe days beyond.
For a happy feet time, give yourself a snappy try.

Do you have a crow problem? Need a Scarecrow?
Scarecrow is a dummy made of straws to scare away crows in the fields.
Oh, we are not talking about that scarecrow but this Twister Strike Scarecrow from the Legends of Batman or one of the arch enemies of Batman.
Scarecrow is able to strike a twister spin rotating 360 degrees by pulling his waist up to release the gimmick. You are able to lock it back to a ratchet waist joint by snapping it back. Cool and useful for a helicopter chopping action.
He also features a red eye light piping and glows in the nightmare to scare you while slashing with his scythe.
His tattered cloth, hat and stick like limps are all detailed if you pay attention to them as they are not shaded or paint washed to bring out the effect.
The one lacking point is his articulation which he only have 5 points namely at the neck, both arms, waist rotation and legs. For his arms, he can only stretch out straight sideways and that's it. Very limited and also his posing makes him slightly tricky to stand due to his feet position.
Even with his bended knees pose, he still match up to about 7.5 inches tall. Not bad for a Kenner figure which they are used to do smaller scales.
This is one of the Batman series figures in the last reining days of Kenner that still impresses me until today.
If you ever see him in card, open him out for a spin.

Who needs a Laugh? Here comes the Joker !
The man who loves to laugh makes his debut by giving you the time to explode your smile....
This is Laughing Gas Joker in 1997 during the Legends of Batman when he hides his disguise of time bomb for laughing gas in his oversize suit, waiting for the opportune time to expose himself with his gas canisters.
What an effort to make a big laugh !
Seen in the last days of Kenner, these figures are the biggest scale in the Batman line then and are spotting details to fight back in the challenging market.
However, we still gets the play gimmick of exploding Joker suit by the press of a button to expose his true self. Even with his suit on, you can still move his arms holding his gun, which means he only have 3 points of articulations including his head rotation.
As in the signature of Kenner days introducing play value for action figures, we are getting less of such features now as kids no longer play with toys while leaving adults to appreciate them.
Besides a gun, you get an evil Joker minion with a sinister smile and he does looks like some evil poker card coming out of Alice Wonderland. A nice addition with zero articulation.
Overall, he is a unique Joker that will never be duplicate in the future.

The Beginning of Predators
Before McFarlane, before Neca, there was Kenner.......who designs and produces the Predators line of action figures.
It is the era when toys are made for fun and a touch of details put into them to instil some level of interest for the adult collectors. The overall build are also meant to take the beating of the kids and weapons and accessories are bigger in an awkward proportions for its size which are usually non-fragile.
Suited with clumsy weapons that fires projectiles, they still preserve a unique charm in them. Time just stuck in the 90's with these guys when you get the hand of them.
No matter how their size proportions are out and how inaccurate they look, they bridge both kids and adults together for play and collection even until today.
Here, I have the Lava Planet Predator, NightStorm Predator and Renegade Predator with Alien from fellow collectors. They each comes with removable masks and who can resists a Predator with a removable mask? It's just too cool to turn away unless you have a face-off with them........
Even with the upgrades being done for them, they are still legendary in their own ways.

Aliens of Yester Years....!
Going through the era of 80's and 90's are booming trends of exciting movies and couple with interesting toys that even today, people still remember and continue to have new born fans. This is the fatal attractions of them.
As Alien movie sprout out in 1979 follow by sequels of Aliens in 1986, Alien 3 (1992) and Alien Ressurection in 1997, we have been endowed with action figures for the Xenomorph with very interesting features though not movie accurate.
The design of the figures still worth taking a magnifying look even for today's improved standards of toys. When you are in the 90's playing with the Kenner Alien figures, you will awed by it's features and the Alien outlook, forgiving it's non-movie accurate standards. But these design faults which deem unforgiving in this current market by collectors are still very much welcome for the yester years toy.
But movie theme toys design back in the 80's and 90's have a higher play value and they are packed with a play feature in mind for the children. That makes these toys relatively interesting which may seem lame now. And apart from that, design constraints are not as bounded compared to now and you can still spot some clever design which are not accepted in the era due to market design guidelines.
As we progressed forward, we might be degrading in some ways which we never noticed and thinking we have improved in life while we have unwittingly degraded.
Recently, I have chanced upon the Flying Queen Alien and Boar Alien figures from Kenner and decided to purchase them for nostalgic sake but ended up admiring their under-rated sculpting which is screaming for attention but mostly hidden or forgotten.
In terms of size, movie accuracy, they are definitely not in line with current expectations. What they have is the fun and crazy ideas that spawn many of the Alien varieties that we never saw on screen.
For me, these Alien toys are much interesting than the current well-sculpted Alien figures which we have now. Their charm lies on the imagination of the designers and bringing that imagination to the play world.
Sometimes, the world do not need realism, it needs imagination.
Well.. let us look at these gems while reminiscence in the past.

True Ogre in Tekken fighting game
Anyone who have played the Tekken 3 game will immediately recognize the figure which I will be introducing but not for folks like me who did not even play the game.
Purely chanced upon this figure named True Ogre in the series designed by Epoch. He is known to be the final king figure that you will fight if you manage to get your way there in the game. I wonder what is so true or no true in an Ogre?
The immediate impression that captures me are his demonic wings and horns coupled with a height of 7 inches tall and wingspan of 8 inches. He is quite a hefty figure that can still balances himself without the support of his tail but tends to topple with some tremors. The next you will find his right arm is a serpent head which I personally feels it is better than his head sculpt.
He dons a pair of scaly legs with fur sculpted on both legs and left hand claw.
His overall paint uses dark tone brown with shades of grey which shows off his details and there are bronze painted for the symbol on his back and sculpted leg band.
With quite an impressive details for a figure in 1999, he must have been a well-sought after prize for some but seems to be a forgotten figure as time passes by. In terms articulation, he has only 3 which includes both shoulders and waist. This is even worse than the standard 5 points articulations given by Kenner Star Wars figures. However, if you compare him to the Warcraft figures designed by DC Unlimited series, he can be well under the same category as statues rather than action figures.
As for an action figure, he is one that fulfills the fantasy of a game character and easily pose-able as a mystic monster creature for your collection.
And since I cannot find much reviews or exposure on this True Ogre at the time of writing this post, it may be a good reference point for some in hunting.
Name : True Ogre
Date of Birth : 1999

Aliens Power Loader
Anyone who have seen the movie, Aliens, will know the epic scene fight between Ripley and Alien Queen, using the Power Loader.
Released by Kenner toys in 1992, this iconic Power Loader handled by Ripley is a simple yet interesting playable toy. It is closest you can get to mimic the fighting scene during that era and toys are meant for play back then takes on serious battle damage and lost parts.
What I acquire here was passed down from a local collector's childhood collection which happen to go through the challenges. With the missile spent and both side cannons ripped off by Alien Queen (I supposed), what the Power Loader now left intact is the machine itself. I would say it is pretty well kept for it's age and it still have the stickers intact.
The basic concept of having your action figure to be strapped in the loader and able to manipulate the grappling action hands, firing off a missile are pure fun. Only gripe is that the "legs" are not designed as separate movable pieces but rather a simple molded track wheels with no wheels to roll.
The pistons are molded and painted to highlight it's function. Very 90's kind of work. On the size, he is about 8 inches tall and 7 inches wide from it's grapple to grapple ends.
If you do not have Ripley, you can also snap in a 5 inch action figure to try it on. Just like Batman did.
What else can you complain about for a toy like this for play. Other than this, you can pay a hefty price tag for a Hot Toys version or we can wait for some companies to produced a screen accurate design meant for 6 inch action figures. I suppose the day will come soon, just like Ed-209 has been revived.
So for some flash back memories. Here is the infamous Power Loader. Somehow, it reminds me of Wall-E.......

Mars Attack Martian Brain Distintegrator
Buying a toy that has never left the box and risked of having a rotten battery compartment are what I have undertaken as a risk buyer.
The Martian Brain Disintegrator is an interesting ray gun produced as a merchandize during the launch of the movie back in 1996, however, the gun has a very interesting features besides sounds and lights. It has a tuning knob to vary the frequency of the firing sound of the gun and also the brain in the gun actually riggles along while you trigger.
How interesting as you do not get such toys made now.
Unfortunately, mine has suffered the consequences as a battery operated toy problem and it does not "fires" anymore.
However, the gun itself and the box art are still very coooool.
Here are their glory.
